Owned Pets in Need of Rehoming
HometoaHome-LOGO-Final-1-1024x477

Homeward Trails’ Home to a Home program promotes keeping animals out of shelters.  Like most shelters, we are often full and cannot physically take any more animals into our shelter or foster homes.

Home to a Home allows individual owners to have their cats and dogs posted for adoption on our website and social media in the hopes that they can move directly from one home to another.

The pets posted here are not Homeward Trails animals, but pets of community members in need of rehoming. You will work directly with the owner to adopt a Home to a Home cat or dog.

If you need to rehome a pet and wish to participate in the Home to a Home program you can find more information here.

OLIVER

English Springer Spaniel
Male • 5 Years

Oliver is a LOVER (and an avid cuddler). I got him in undergrad and he came from a farm in Southern MO. He had a rough upbringing before I adopted him (he came to me with wounds and infections). From there he has had a difficult time with anxiety and while he can play nicely with other dogs, he expresses some emotional volatility with dogs as well ( I can’t quite pinpoint it, but he has gone to daycares and playdates and has never had an issue). That being said, he is very much a people person and would prefer being with humans over dogs. Sadly, I am at a point where I am struggling to take care of his needs. He is anxious and is a bad leash walker. He shows tendency of leash aggression. I have low bandwidth due to work and doctoral studies, thus I want to provide him a better situation. He is a a good boy, he just needs space to run, roam, and actually be a dog.

He is a good boy, but he needs more attention and more ways to get his energy out. I feel that he would be best suited in a home with a yard, or a home with EASY access to the outside. Additionally, the parent needs to be patient and willing to work with Oliver.

Lou (1)

LOU

Mixed Breed, Large
Male • 4 Years

Lou is a wonderful 4-year-old mixed breed that we adopted in Virginia when he was 8 weeks old. He is a true sweetheart that loves getting pets, taking naps, snuggling, and playing.

Lou is housebroken and is great in the car. The reason we are looking for a new home for Lou is because he struggles with small children (we have two).

If you are looking for a loving & loyal partner, Lou is your dog!

calvin

Calvin

Corgi Mix
Male • 5 Years

We’ve had to make the gut wrenching decision to surrender our sweet boy due to a family situation beyond our control. As a very last hope, we wanted to post here in case anyone is looking to adopt a dog or knows someone that may be interested. If we cannot find someone, we will have to surrender him to a shelter, and we really do not want to do that.

Calvin is a super sweet ~5 year old corgi mutt. He loves toys, walks, and snuggles. He’s extremely smart – we call him Houdini because he always outsmarts us, in a funny way. He loves very very deeply. He’s the perfect mix of energy when you want to play and lazy when you’re busy.

He would thrive in a home with no children or other pets. In full disclosure, he must be put away when visitors are over (as he “herds” strangers thinking they are sheep – but only in the house and never has issues in public). He also has resource guarding issues with other dogs (very rarely, but it happens!), so needs to be the only dog in the house or with a dog larger than him. He has never been around children, but we think it would be best if he is in a home without children.

If you or anyone you know is interested, please please reach out to us. We will gladly make the trip to drop him off to ensure he is in a good home (even if is very far away). We hope he can bring someone else as much joy as he has brought us.

jojo

JoJo

Mixed Breed
Male • Almost 2 Years

JoJo is an energetic companion with lots of love for his family, food, and toys. He loves playing with other dogs as long as they can keep up with his energy. JoJo is protective of his family. He has a hard time meeting strangers and thus needs a reliable family that can be with him everyday. (He shouldn’t be left in a daycare/kennel with strangers if going out of town.) Ideally he would love a home with a yard so he can run. He knows basic commands, is extremely loyal to his people, and is very food motivated.

venus

Venus

Mix
Female • 1 Year

Venus is a very loving and active dog. She loves a good blanket when she’s cuddling or sleeping. She loves to run around and especially play fetch. She loves play with toys as well. She can be very sassy and makes funny noises when she doesn’t get her way. She is a great eater and eats her meals all the way. She’s a jumper and jumps extremely high!

Since we’ve had her we have tried our best to train some of her behavioral issues. She is a bit of an anxious dog and will bite her nails if not given something else to bite. She has trouble calming down with separation and with dogs sometimes (though she’s improved since having her). She’s doesn’t play well with certain types of dogs and is still learning to socialize and read social cues.

We’ve trained her a good deal in obedience classes with waits, sits, bed placements and more, but she is a puller and can be a little all over the place when walking. Overall, she’s a loving girl who just has a lot of energy and needs patience to work through her behavioral issues.

Heineken

Heineken

Mix
Male • 6 Years

Heineken loves to play especially tug-of-war and be walked. Adores the attention. Listens to commands like sit and stay, and can play catch. Does have some anxiety issues with exposures to new people and other pets – needs time to adjust. He is very quiet and doesn’t often bark only when someone is at the door.

Jack

Jack

Mix
Male • 12 Years

Jack is a 12 year old, 35-pound black lab mix. He is very sweet with adults, but generally does not like children or puppies. He does not have much interest in other dogs, and would prefer a walk with his people rather than a visit to the dog park.

Now that he’s in his golden years he mostly sleeps and cuddles, but he’s still up for some playtime or a short walk. He is hard of hearing so it can be challenging to get his attention.

If you are looking for a sweet, cuddly dog that prefers to sit in your lap and keep you company while you work, Jack is the companion for you.

izzy

Izzy

Canaan Dog
Female • 2 Years

Izzy is a sweet and ultra cute 2.5 yr old Canaan Dog originally from Israel! She is house-trained, crate trained, lives with her cat sibling, and loves dogs.

Izzy is a very sensitive girl and takes time to warm up to new situations and environments. With proper acclimation, Izzy attends doggy daycare, rides in cars, and boards at kennels with ease.

True to the Canaan Dog breed, Izzy is wary of strangers, and requires help and management dealing with unfamiliar people approaching or entering her home. Once she trusts you, she is an affectionate sweetheart who loves treats and belly rubs.

Izzy’s favorite form of exercise is playing with other dogs. Once tired out, she happily snoozes the day away. Izzy needs a quiet/rural home or farm with experienced and patient owners who can help her work through her nerves. She would greatly benefit from having a confident dog sibling to help show her the ropes and prove that the world is not a scary place. Will transport Izzy to the right home.

Lexie

Lexie

Lab Mix
Female • 1 Year

Lexie is a very sweet lab mix girl. Lots of fun and energy. She loves to fetch soft toys, and bring them back. She also loves to get lots of ear and face rubs. She does well at the groomers, once she feels safe. She would probably work best in a home with one dog, or a dog her size.

barton

Barton

Pointer Mix
Male • 5 Years

Barton was adopted almost 5 years ago from a rescue organization when he was 11 months old. He is a sweet, loving, smart, affectionate dog with his owners and loves to be petted, run along the beach and play with other dogs. He experiences anxiety around people he doesn’t know well and has nipped at them. Barton has completed several trainings and understands commands and is very food oriented. He also is on medication to help with his anxiety issues. As far as dietary needs, he eats dry food that is grain-free.

An ideal environment for Barton is a home with no children and opportunity to play and interact with other dogs. He is an energetic dog so a place to run around or have someone who can take him out for runs would be ideal. Barton responds best to consistency and routine. He is neutered and is up to date on all his vaccines.

Bruno

Bruno

Pit Bull Mix
Male • 9 Years

Bruno is the loveiest of lovebugs. He will never not want pets and will stay by your side until your hands are tired. He doesn’t care too much for children unless they have some snackies that he can gently swipe from their hands. Bruno doesn’t do well with strange animals, but once he has accepted one is part of the household, it is smooth sailing.

  • Helping Happy Hounds – Fee Waived Hound Adoptions

As you may or may not know, Virginia animal shelters are filled with Hounds. These amazing dogs are most often discarded by callous hunters, found starving wandering the countryside. Many never make it as hunters and are then tied up to chains or left along the side of the road like old furniture. A good number of them do not make it out of shelters alive. But these dogs – like all dogs – are amazing and worthy of families. We just cannot get them families fast enough to stop them from dying in our shelters when there is no more space. And so we are trying something new here. ALL HOUND DOGS ADOPTED FROM HOMEWARD TRAILS WILL BE FREE. Yes, we are WAIVING ADOPTION FEES for Hounds for the foreseeable future. We hope that will entice well-matched applicants to consider a Hound now. Use the money you save on training, treats, toys.We think all dogs are worthy. But the reality is that some take extra incentives. Some have more barriers to getting adopted. And the result is well, more end up dying. And no – this does NOT mean we are just giving dogs away. All applicants will still go through our application/screening process to ensure good homes. This is just us trying to save more dogs by eliminating one more barrier to adoption. And hey, Hound lovers can use all the extra money they can get to buy treats, right?Help us help these Hounds. Our program Helping Happy Hounds is live NOW. Let’s save some lives!
